Guest Post: Tough Days Bruise, But People Survive

I know the name of this blog is Confessions of a Sports Mama, BUT this post from NFL Super Bowl XXVI winning linebacker turned #sportsdad Andre Collins, spoke to my heart. Collins currently serves as Executive Director, Professional Athletes Foundation for the National Football League Players Association, where he works to ensure retirees make successful post-football transitions. When he's not in the office, he can be seen (and heard!) cheering his children on, alongside his beautiful wife, Ericka.

What a joy, when my son Chet plays a great game! Ah, that’s my boy!! Then again, there’s probably nothing worse in all of sports than watching my son pitch a tough inning or miss a few easy layups on the basketball court. I know, without a doubt, the sports gods can be cruel. Even with practice and preparation, somehow the ‘sporting god of adversity and humility’ finds his way to the action.

As a parent, nothing pains me more than seeing my kids struggle. It hurts to watch those humbling moments that competing in sports can create. Watching those life lessons unfold right before my eyes is all too familiar because I’ve had my shot blocked, struck out and fumbled the ball many times. I know how that feels. I know how that stuck in my head. I know that embarrassment. Therefore, I know my son’s pain. I want to hug him, demand a do-over or take on some of those other kids myself.

But let me stop. What in the world is driving my need to make his experience perfect? Why should I care so much if he fails?

I tried. I failed. I lived. I know those tough days made me better. Tough days bruise, but people survive. I had to stop myself from managing every second of Chet’s sports life. Which meant I categorically needed to shut up.

I stopped giving tips and advice right before and right after games. I think about my own loving father, who didn’t come to every game like parents do today. That wasn’t a thing back then in the 70’s. When I had a bad game, I walked that mile home alone, no parents, with my friends laughing a little about other stuff. I knew I didn’t play great but I worked those feelings out in my head without my father’s consoling. I survived and somewhere in that process I developed a resiliency and spirit to get better, to do better and to try again.

I have knowledge about competing and preparation. I’ll find appropriate times to share good advice with him.

For now, I give him his space to process. I realize he needs the space to breathe and mourn a poor performance and to feel good about himself when he plays well. He must develop his own coping skills. He’s a boy becoming a man through the competition of sport.

I’m still learning new things about fatherhood and glad I could realize this is my son’s chance to grow.

Action Creates Opportunity. Let your ability to pull back, listen and be still create an opportunity for your kids to experience life and become the people they were meant to be.

You don't have to know Collins personally to understand the love that he has for his family. The love that he has for sports. The joy that watching his children play brings him.

But if you do, as I do, consider yourself lucky. In a world full of amazing Sports Mamas, he is truly one amazing #sportsdad!

Sports Mama Review: Redskins Moms Football Safety Clinic

This past Thursday, I met up with two of my favorite sports mamas and we headed down to Richmond for a football safety clinic hosted by the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation. It was only $10 to attend, however, preregistration was required as spaces were extremely limited (only 100 to be exact!).

The clinic was held at Bon Secours Training Facility- the same facility that the Washington Redskins hold training camp at!

It was my first time at the clinic, as well as at the park. Upon arrival, we went through a quick security check, signed a waiver, and were given our VIP passes! Woot woot!

Once we received our passes, we were taken to a tent where lunch (wraps, potato salad, pasta salad, and fruit) awaited us. As did these awesome dri-fit tees...

Seriously... how cute are they?!

While we ate, we heard from several different guest speakers. There was a demonstration given by Dick's Sporting Goods employees (who also happened to be former college football players!) on equipment; including how it should fit, optional items for added protection, and the huge strides that have been made to ensure that our players are as safe as possible when on the field.

A couple of former Redskins were in the tent house as well! Super Bowl champion Gary Clarke and fan favorite Chris Cooley shared their thoughts on youth football as well as some of their own personal experiences.

I absolutely loved hearing them share stories of their mothers supporting them throughout their football careers! A couple of quotes in particular really stood out to me:

"Football is the best family a guy can join."- Gary Clarke

"Be present. Be there for your kids. That's what matters most." - Chris Cooley

After we heard from the guest speakers, we moved outside for a 45 minute Heads Up instructional activity taught by a USA Football master trainer.

Yep, that's me in the "break down" position. Don't laugh! We were taught the proper tackling technique (head up) and even ran a few drills. Fun!

The clinic wrapped up at 2pm, but not before we were given these super cute, swag filled bags! I will definitely be rocking mine this season.

We were also given VIP access to stay and watch the players practice. And VIP it was! We were seated right behind one of the goal posts. Say whaaat? Winning!

It was hands down one of the most fun days I've had in a long time. Football, (girl)friends, and food- what's not to like? In fact there was just one negative I can think of... porta-potties. Ugh. Gross!

I will definitely be back next year (even if there still is no indoor plumbing available)! Ha! And I would highly encourage you to attend your home team's clinic as well.

Hail to the Redskins!!!

Washington Redskins Valentine's Day Box

Valentines Day is only 4 days away! Prior to our boys being born, hubby and I were all about that V-Day life (fighting with crowds at fancy restaurants, spending a fortune on finding that perfect gift). Fast forward 15 years (and 3 kids later!) and it's all about them now. Well, for the most part anyway. We still enjoy a good dinner and an occasional small gift exchange, but I have to admit, I enjoy getting the boys ready for their school celebrations just as much, if not a tad bit more. I love going to craft stores and seeing all the red, pink, glitter, and hearts everywhere. Speaking of hearts, I found strawberry flavored heart-shaped marshmallows at my local Safeway. Shhh, don't tell my boys. It's a surprise!

Each boy is doing something different this year. Not that I wasn't expecting that. No. 1 is in the sixth grade and has decided that he won't be handing out cards this Valentine's Day. Sad, I know. My boy is growing up. He's almost as tall as I am and spends just as much time fixing his hair (if not more!) as I do.

No. 2 is in the fifth grade and his class is having a Valentines Day box contest. In a nutshell, each child is to create a box to hold his/her Valentine's cards from their classmates. They must create it on their own and be able to transport it to and from school without any help. Winners will be chosen in each of the following categories (traditional theme, most creative, most "green", sports theme, animal theme, and book/movie theme). The winners will receive $500 in bonus bucks which can be used towards privileges such as extra recess, choosing where to sit, etc. Anyone want to guess what theme No. 2 chose? Well, the sports theme of course!

He went with his favorite football team, the Washington Redskins! We used a USPS priority mail box. You can find them for free at your local post office.

We purchased all the materials at Michaels (construction paper, popsicle aka craft sticks, football shaped stickers). I love that you can always find a coupon to use. I actually had two this time!

Then he went to work!

I found the football field diagram on Pinterest and simply printed it out.

Coach Hubby helped him cut the hole in the top. Ha, check out his pajama pants. I swear this wasn't planned!

Lastly, he added a couple of football players aka Lego mini figures to the field.

A friend of mine is making Redskins Valentines cards to match his theme. Because we're hard-core fans over here!

I think he has a pretty good chance of winning, don't you?!

No. 3 is in the second grade and handing out store bought Minion cards. He loves Minions! This is the second year in a row that he's carried a Minion backpack and lunchbox to school.

Happy (early) Valentine's Day!!!
